Production Of The 2019 Festival D’aix-en-provence

A Coproduction With Adelaide Festival, Theater Basel, Wiener Festwochen, Palau De Les Arts Reina Sofía, La Monnaie / De Munt

As her existence draws to a close, a woman plunges into the night of her final journey and travels back through the different stages of her life. Like the shadow she casts, the whole of creation now unfolds from the very beginning, through the inexorable litany of all things that are no more. But then a chain of fraternal and festive dancers casts its strength into the battle, bursting with all the joyful energy of the living. Few works have provoked as much commentary as this final Requiem. From his long association with death, Mozart forged a testament of universal significance, giving voice to human anxiety and the terror of the cosmos, but also charting a path towards pacification and light. For Romeo Castellucci, finitude gives to all things their value and to works of art their beauty. With Raphaël Pichon leading a new generation of singers and the musical forces of Pygmalion, whose extraordinary performance offers a distillation of our entire humanity, this famous work is transformed into a unique listening experience.

Theater of the Archbishop

With its grand staircase, medieval arches and 17th century wings enclosing an almost square space, the courtyard of the former archbishop’s palace in Aix is a jewel in the architectural crown of Aix-en-Provence and one of the locations that most memorably evokes the past of its historic centre. It was made into a theatre in 1948 and is now the venue most closely associated with the Festival.

It was last refurbished in 1998, when the facades were restored and work was undertaken to create a special relationship between stage and audience. Every summer, the Théâtre de l’Archevêché exudes a magical atmosphere, which François Mauriac described as reminiscent of “Don Juan among the stars”.
